Men Urged to Treat Mental Health Like Physical Fitness Ahead of Men’s Health Week

With Men’s Health Week coming up from 15–21 June, Greenhill Counselling is encouraging men to check in on their mental health and challenge the idea that “just getting on with it” is enough.

Men’s Health Week isn’t only about physical health—it’s also a reminder to pause, reflect, and give your mental well-being the attention it deserves.

For many men, life can feel like a constant push to keep going—provide for your family, show up at work, hold things together, don’t complain. Somewhere along the way, your own wellbeing can slip down the priority list. You might notice you’re more irritable, exhausted, disconnected, or stuck in the same patterns, yet still telling yourself to “just push through.”

But mental health isn’t a switch you turn on only when things fall apart. It’s more like a muscle. If it’s ignored, overworked, or never given time to recover, it strains. If it’s looked after consistently, it becomes stronger, more flexible, and better able to handle pressure.

Many men are taught—often indirectly—that being strong means coping silently. That asking for help is a last resort, or a sign of failure. In reality, the opposite is true. Just as you would rest, rehab, or train properly after a physical injury, your mental health also needs regular attention to perform well overtime.

Often, men seek help only when something reaches breaking point: work stress, relationship strain, anger, burnout, or a growing sense of feeling lost. Many are used to being the one others rely on, but aren’t used to being supported themselves. That doesn’t mean you’re failing—it means you’re human.

Looking after your mental health isn’t about becoming someone else or talking about feelings for the sake of it. It’s about gaining clarity, managing pressure more effectively, and making changes that fit your real life. It’s about keeping yourself strong enough—mentally and emotionally—to show up at work, for your family, and for yourself.

Men’s Health Week is a timely reminder that you don’t have to wait until things get worse. Just like physical fitness, mental well-being works best when it’s maintained, not repaired after injury. Taking responsibility for your mental health isn’t weakness—it’s strength, and it’s one of the most practical investments a man can make.
